I am having a similar problem, except my error is:

Aug 24 15:14:25 master mgmtd: [5879]: ERROR: on_listen receive login msg failed

The password is correct.  hacluster is in the group haclient.  I do
not have pam_unix2.so on my box, which is running Centos5 with the
2.6.18 kernel.  I have installed heartbeat 2.1.2 via yum.

any help much appreciated.
