[Linux-HA] Updating Packages

We have a heartbeat/drbd setup with mysql & apache.
We use DRBDLINKS to make it easier to update packages.

We recently did an update for mysql, which we performed on both boxes.
This for some reason destroyed our mySQL database, not only was root account
changed to the default, the user accounts were also removed, I am not sure
but I suspect the data was killed as well.   I had to do a restore of the
mySQL database to bring the system backup.

Any idea how I can avoid this disaster in the future and do updates on both
nodes without causing this type of grief?

I use heartbeat 1.2.x and debian sarge (w/ backports as needed)
