Turn on strict memory allocation (assuming you're running a 2.6.x kernel), 
or just run an OS with a real VM subsystem. The OOM killer crud is one of 
the worst ideas I've seen in Linux - someone should be spanked.

More to the point, if the kernel starts shooting random processes, there's 
only so much heartbeat can do. Do you have STONITH configured?
