[Linux-HA] Stonith with APC Smart UPS 1000 & USB no Debian

I've have two APC Smart 1000 Rack-mounted UPS and would like to set up
stonith with them.  The Debian hosts don't have any spare serial ports,
but the UPS's have both USB and serial port connections and I'd like to
set up direct USB connections if I could.  The "apcsmart" stonith type
only talks about serial port.  Will it work over USB?  If so, how do I
set it up?  I found some web sites referring to the usbhid module which I
loaded and they talk about creating /dev/usb/hid devices but those didn't
get created (the web site was for Fedora).  Otherwise I could get USB to
serial port converters, would those work better?
