ppp-udp and serial link

Just to make sure that I am on the right track.

ppp-udp, and the serial options are mutually exclusive.  Right??

If I only want to setup a heartbeat then use the serial option.

If I want to copy some files from machine to machine then I would 
use the ppp-udp option.

Is this correct??
